Amazon just walked out on its self-checkout technology
Amazon is removing Just Walk Out tech from all of its Fresh grocery stores in the US, as reported by The Information. The self-checkout system relies on a host of cameras, sensors and good old-fashioned human eyeballs to track what people leave the store with, charging the customers accordingly. The technology has been plagued by issues from the onset. Most notably, Just Walk Out merely presents the illusion of automation, with Amazon crowing about generative AI and the like. Here's where the smoke and mirrors come in.

Meet Astro: Amazon just unveiled its own home robot that can follow you around
On Tuesday, Amazon announced Astro, a home robot the company says can help owners keep up with tasks such as home monitoring or keeping in touch with family and friends. "One of the things I love about working at Amazon is inventing the future, and I've spent a lot of time since that day on a team that's imagining how robots can help customers in new ways at home," said Charlie Tritschler, vice president of products at Amazon in a blog post. It's available by invite only for $999.99. Astro takes advantage of both Alexa and Ring, its line of home security offerings. The robot can be set to autonomously roam around your home to check for safety.
Here's everything Amazon just announced
In addition to new hardware, Amazon also revealed new Alexa features, including "doorbell concierge," which adds the voice assistant to Ring smart doorbells. The update makes Alexa more conversational when interacting with people at a user's front door, including asking if it can "take a message" or telling a deliveryman where to leave a package. Another new Alexa feature uses AI to mimic celebrity voices. For 99 cents, users can select the voice of a celebrity such as actor Samuel L. Jackson to tell them the weather, set alarms and play music. The feature is set to roll out later this year.

Competition in the AI Cloud Is Heating Up, and Amazon Just Made a Big Move
The cloud is no longer just a data dump--it's an AI battleground, and Amazon wants to beat all comers into submission. The ethereal digital realm that we know as the cloud started as a remote space to store files and run some code. Put the two together--data and algorithms--and you have the ideal place to run AI, letting it chomp through information and do smart things with it. Big tech firms know that, and as we've explained before, competition has become fierce to provide AI on remote servers as a service to developers. Now the cloud computing leader, Amazon Web Services, has AI-savvy firms like Microsoft and Google nipping at its heels.
